Medicare Guidance for the Queen City
Turning 65, retiring from a job with benefits, or simply opening a thick envelope from your current plan can leave you with more questions than answers. Which doctors are covered next year? Will your blood pressure pills cost more? Is the plan your friend from church mentioned better than yours? We sit down with you by phone or video and work through those questions one at a time.
We are a private insurance agency, and our phone line connects you with a licensed insurance agent. Because the agency is appointed with more than one insurance company, we can line up several plans side by side using your own prescriptions and providers, then tell you honestly where each one comes out ahead or falls short.
Plainfield is a bilingual city. The 2020 Census counted 54,586 residents, and for the first time a majority, about 55 percent, were Hispanic or Latino. Census Bureau survey data for 2020 to 2024 shows that roughly half of residents age five and older speak Spanish at home. That is why any review can be held completely in Spanish, and why grown children or caregivers are always welcome to listen in (U.S. Census Bureau(opens another website)).

Rooted in Plainfield's Story
Plainfield picked up its "Queen City" nickname in the 1880s, when a local publisher promoted its healthy climate as the "Colorado of the East," a nod to Denver, the Queen City of the Plains. Long before that, in 1746, the Drake House on West Front Street was built for Nathaniel Drake; George Washington met with his officers there around the Battle of Short Hills in June 1777. Today the house is a city-owned museum run by the Historical Society of Plainfield (Drake House Museum(opens another website)).
The city's neighborhoods are just as varied as its history, from the Victorian streets of the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District and Sleepy Hollow to the West End and the blocks around Netherwood. Wherever you live in town, the questions about Medicare rarely change: Is my doctor in the network? Will this plan cover my medicine? Can someone explain it in Spanish? We answer those first and talk about enrolling only when you are ready.

The Four Parts of Medicare, Briefly
Part A is hospital insurance. Most people pay no premium for it, but in 2026 each benefit period starts with a $1,736 deductible. Part B pays for doctor visits, lab work and outpatient care; the standard premium is $202.90 a month and the yearly deductible is $283.
Part C, known as Medicare Advantage, is a private plan that delivers your Part A and Part B benefits and usually includes drug coverage. Part D is separate prescription coverage you can add to Original Medicare. For 2026, what you pay for covered drugs tops out at $2,100 for the year, and covered insulin is capped at $35 a month.

Plans That Travel With You
Plainfield has two NJ Transit stops on the Raritan Valley Line, the downtown station on North Avenue and the smaller Netherwood station to the east, and plenty of our neighbors use them to visit family in Newark, New York and well beyond. Many also spend weeks or months each year with relatives in Latin America or the Caribbean.
Travel matters when you pick a plan. Original Medicare works with any provider in the country that accepts it, while most Medicare Advantage plans rely on local networks, apart from emergency and urgent care. Coverage outside the United States is very limited in most cases, and some Medigap policies include a foreign travel emergency benefit. We walk through how each option treats time away before you commit.

Local Support for Plainfield Seniors
The Plainfield Senior Citizens Center at 400 East Front Street, in the heart of downtown, is run by the city for residents 55 and older. It offers trips, computer and art classes, healthy living programs, transportation help and more (City of Plainfield(opens another website)). The center is also one of Union County's Senior Café sites, serving lunch on weekdays to adults 60 and older by reservation (Union County Senior Café(opens another website)).
For in-home services, caregiver support and benefits questions, the Union County Division on Aging is the county's designated Area Agency on Aging, with a dedicated Spanish-language line (Union County Division on Aging(opens another website)). And when it is time to get moving, the Olmsted-designed paths of Green Brook Park and Cedar Brook Park are close by. Cedar Brook's Shakespeare Garden, planted in 1927 and still tended by the Plainfield Garden Club, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NJ Historic Trust(opens another website)).
Key Dates and 2026 Numbers
Medicare's Open Enrollment Period runs every year from October 15 to December 7. During those weeks you can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, and the new coverage begins January 1.
If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get a second window from January 1 to March 31 to move to a different Part C plan or return to Original Medicare.
Approaching 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months: the three months before your birthday month, the month itself and the three months after. Missing it can mean late penalties that last as long as you have coverage. Our turning 65 guide and annual plan review page explain what to watch.

Protect Yourself From Medicare Scams
Medicare will not call you out of the blue to sell a plan or ask for your Medicare number, and a reputable agent will not push you to decide during a first phone call. If someone offers free gifts in exchange for your number or says you must act today, hang up. You can report suspected fraud on Medicare.gov's fraud reporting page(opens another website).
Click to CallPlainfield Medicare Questions, Answered
Is there a fee for comparing plans with you?
No. We are paid by the insurance company when a client enrolls, and the premium is identical whether you sign up through us, through the insurer or on Medicare.gov.
¿Atienden en español?
Sí. Muchas familias de Plainfield prefieren hablar de Medicare en español, y podemos hacer la revisión completa en su idioma, con sus hijos o nietos en la llamada si usted quiere.
Are you part of Medicare or the City of Plainfield?
No. We are a private insurance agency. We are not part of Medicare, Social Security, the State of New Jersey, Union County or the City of Plainfield.
I like my plan. Why review it every fall?
Because insurers can change networks, drug lists and copays for January even when nothing about your health has changed. The Annual Notice of Change your plan mails in early fall lists those updates, and a short review tells you whether staying put still makes sense.
What should I gather before we talk?
A list of your medicines with doses, the names of your doctors and the pharmacy you use. You do not need to give your Medicare number to compare plans.
