Care for Teeth, Eyes and Ears
Many people are surprised to learn that Original Medicare covers very little routine dental, vision or hearing care. Cleanings, fillings, dentures, eyeglasses and hearing aids are usually your cost, and they can add up quickly.
There are ways to get help. Many Medicare Advantage plans include allowances for these services, and stand-alone dental and vision insurance is also available. The details vary widely, so reading the benefit carefully matters.
We explain how each option works and compare the plans we offer, in English or Spanish.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
What Original Medicare Covers
- Dental services directly tied to certain covered medical treatments, such as some care before heart surgery or cancer treatment
- An eye exam each year for diabetic retinopathy if you have diabetes
- Glaucoma testing each year for people at high risk
- One pair of glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery with an implanted lens
- Hearing and balance exams when your doctor orders them to diagnose a problem
Routine checkups, cleanings, regular eyeglass prescriptions and hearing aids are generally not covered.
Benefits in Medicare Advantage Plans
Many Part C plans include preventive dental care, and some cover fillings, crowns or dentures with annual limits. Vision benefits may include a yearly eye exam and an allowance for frames or lenses. Hearing benefits may include an exam and help toward hearing aids.
Look closely at the annual maximum, waiting periods and whether you must use a specific network of dentists or optical shops. A generous allowance helps only if a provider near Plainfield accepts it. Our Medicare Advantage page explains how we compare those plans.
Other Ways to Pay
Stand-alone dental insurance and discount plans are available to people with Original Medicare. Some have waiting periods for major work, so timing matters if you need dentures or implants.
Since 2022, adults with mild to moderate hearing loss can buy over-the-counter hearing aids without a prescription, often at lower prices than prescription devices. A hearing exam is still a good first step.
Comparing Allowances Fairly
Two plans can both advertise dental coverage and still differ by hundreds of dollars in practice. One may cover two cleanings and X-rays only, while another adds fillings, extractions and a yearly allowance toward dentures. Vision allowances may apply to frames only, or to frames and lenses together, and some must be used at a specific store.
For hearing, some plans offer a set copay for a device from a contracted vendor, while others give a dollar amount you can use with any provider. We put those numbers side by side with the plan's premium, copays and network, so you can see the full value rather than the headline benefit.
Making the Most of Your Benefits
Use preventive benefits early in the year, keep receipts for allowances and ask your provider to check your plan's coverage before major work. If dental, vision or hearing benefits are a priority, our annual plan review each fall can confirm they continue for the next year.
