Programs That Lower What You Pay
Medicare premiums, deductibles and copays come out of the same budget that pays rent, food and utilities. For many Plainfield households, that adds up fast. New Jersey offers several programs that can help, and the federal government offers more.
Many people who qualify never apply, often because the names are confusing or because they assume their income is too high. Income limits change each year, and some programs count assets while others do not.
We explain each program in plain language, help you see which may fit and point you to the right office to apply. Everything can happen in Spanish.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Medicare Savings Programs
These state-run programs help pay Medicare costs for people with limited income and resources. Depending on the level, they can pay your Part B premium and, at the top level, your Part A and Part B deductibles and coinsurance too.
- QMB pays Part B premiums plus most Medicare cost sharing
- SLMB pays the Part B premium
- QI pays the Part B premium for people with somewhat higher income, while funding lasts
Qualifying for any of these levels usually qualifies you for Extra Help with drug costs as well.
Extra Help With Prescriptions
Extra Help, also called the Low-Income Subsidy, is a federal program run through Social Security. It lowers Part D premiums, deductibles and copays. Since 2024, people with incomes up to 150 percent of the federal poverty level who meet resource limits can qualify for the full benefit.
You can apply online through Social Security, and people with NJ FamilyCare or a Medicare Savings Program are usually enrolled automatically.
New Jersey's PAAD and Senior Gold
PAAD, the Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled program, helps eligible New Jersey residents age 65 or older, or with a disability, pay for prescriptions. Members pay a small copay for covered drugs, and the program works alongside a Part D plan.
Senior Gold serves people whose income is above the PAAD limits but still modest. Members pay a set copay plus a share of the drug's cost. Both programs require that you enroll in Part D, and they can help with your plan's premium in some cases.
Choosing a drug plan that works well with PAAD matters. We check how each Part D plan interacts with these programs before you decide.
Local Places to Ask
The Union County Division on Aging, the county's Area Agency on Aging, offers information and referrals, including a Spanish line at 908-527-4863. The Plainfield Senior Citizens Center at 400 East Front Street runs programs for residents 55 and older and is a good place to ask about local events and services.
Free, unbiased counseling is also available through New Jersey's SHIP program. If you have Medicare and full Medicaid, see our D-SNP guide for plans built for you.

Click to CallSaving on Costs Questions From Plainfield
Will applying affect my Social Security check?
No. These programs lower health costs and do not reduce your Social Security benefit. A savings program may actually increase your take-home amount by paying your Part B premium.
My income went down this year. Should I reapply?
Yes. Eligibility is based on current income and resources, so a change may make you eligible for a program that denied you before.
Do I need a Part D plan if I have PAAD?
Yes. PAAD and Senior Gold generally require Part D enrollment and work together with your plan.
¿Me ayudan a entender estos programas en español?

Do you charge to explain these programs?
No. There is no cost, and we never ask for payment.
